INTERVIEW with Jacyln Joy || Brisbane Fashion Festival 2024 Designer (Hancock Prospecting Next Gen Group Show)
SD: Hi Jaclyn, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
JJ: Hiiiii! I’m Jaclyn Joy!
I live in Brisbane but I have lived all over the east coast. I grew up with both parents being sewers, studied fashion design at MSIT and then moved to Melbourne to chase my fashion dreams! I worked for wedding dress designers Anna Campbell, Marianna Hardwick and Elly Sofocli. I have always been a creative, colourful and a little crazy! I’m now back in Brisbane and starting my new dream of a slow, ethically made and sourced fashion brand.
SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?
JJ: I run an Alterations business (I still do) and what inspires me is those clients and customers. I noticed that so many people struggle to find something that fits their body perfectly. That’s why I started “design-a-dress”.
This feature helps all my beautiful customers to choose the style of dress from the sleeves to skirt style, they just put in their measurements, choose a fabric from many options and then it is made for them. For their bodies. I want to create cute comfy clothing for people to feel amazing in.
SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?
JJ: I op-shop! My favourite thing to do is browse the linen section and find the most colourful, fun and great quality prints I can. This means that each dress is one of a kind. I wanted to create a slow fashion brand made from up-cycled and second hand fabrics.
Our op shops are overflowing with fast fashion so if I can help with that and reducing a little bit of landfill then I feel like I’m doing something to help our environment.
SD: How do you want people to feel when wearing your pieces?
JJ: My dresses are made for the everyday ladies (they/thems or just anyone who wants to wear a cute dress), those who go to markets on Sundays, love brunch with their friends, heading to the beach and going for picnics on sunny days.
I want people to feel comfortable but still fabulous. I want them to know that they CAN have clothes that fit them right no matter what body shape or size they are. I want people to feel like they are doing just a little bit to fight fast fashion and buy Australian made.
SD: What is your favourite part of being a designer?
JJ: Ooooh Just one favourite? Hmmm I think just knowing that I can make someone feel beautiful in something that fits is just the best feeling! I just want to help people see the beauty I see in them.
SD: Without giving too much details away, what should we expect from your collection for Brisbane Fashion Festival 2024 event?
JJ: Well, without going into too much detail.. Colourful, comfy and a just a little bit crazy ;p
