SD: Hi George, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?

GW: I am a couture constructionist based in Brisbane. I love innovation and am constantly researching and developing new techniques to make the impossible possible. It’s the art behind the making of couture that truly motivates me throughout the day. Other than that, I am a regular person who loves to learn anything that I find curiosity in.

SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?

GW: I don’t really make collections at the moment; we create a few pieces per year due to our workload with clients' projects. When I create pieces to show as samples or content, it’s really about demonstrating the new techniques we have developed that we could offer to future clients. Most people keep thinking we only sell what we show, but that’s not what I am about.

I run a couture atelier where clients can come to have things designed and made. They can pitch their own ideas too; our job is to bring ideas to life with our skill level. If the request is too easy, I often suggest design details that make the piece unique and hard to recreate by others. It’s the challenge that I thrive on.

SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?

GW: When I design for my clients, I would understand the client’s point of view and design based on how I see them and what flatters their figure. If it’s my personal work, I like to design something that involves techniques that make other dressmakers scratch their heads trying to figure out how we did it. Design is more than just the look, it’s the techniques behind it that I see it as a form of art.

SD: How do you want people to feel when wearing your pieces?

GW: When my work brings the wearer confidence, I know I’ve done my job right. I see fashion as a form of expressing your personality, and it should help you feel good about yourself.

SD: What is your favourite part of being a designer?

GW: The freedom to create beautiful things and knowing that it makes others feel great about themselves.

SD: Without giving too much details away, what should we expect from your collection for Fashion Queensland event on July 11 2024?

GW: Structures; it’s about the way the dress sits on the body, and the model doesn’t have to worry about the fit. We are developing a new technique to create a daring neckline while ensuring the wearer feels secure. We're also working on ways to develop new techniques to combine different textiles to achieve this fluid look.
