SD: Hi Kellie, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
K: Hello and thank you for having me. I’m Kellie and I have pretty much been a dress collector most of my life.

I started RicRac Road almost 4 years ago. It is something that I have always wanted to do.  My background is not in fashion but in Information Technology so this is quite the departure but one that I am so happy I took.

I am born and bred in Brisbane but before we had our children, we moved around quite a bit and did some overseas stints in the USA and also in China and I think that the seeds for starting a clothing label were planted during those years loving overseas.

SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?

K: My word of the year this year is PROGRESS - both meanings (to move forwards and to develop towards an improved state).  I often repeat styles but in new fabrics and with each collection this year I had to ask myself “Is this progress?”

I also love to mix and match existing styles. I sometimes steal the top portion of one style and match it to the skirt of another and I have done a bit of that with Spring Summer 2023.

The beginning of the year was a slow time for retail, so when preparing for the Spring Summer Collections I looked at my best sellers from previous years and really tried to work out how I could make them even better.  So I guess my inspiration was really to just do better and progress.

SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?

K: If you follow me you know that I am a big coffee lover. I just love it.  I am also a very early riser and those early morning moments sitting alone and having my coffee are definitely when I find myself being the most creative.  An early start and a hot coffee get me in the zone.

SD: How do you want people to feel when wearing your pieces?

K: My “why” is  to make “Clothes to make you feel good” and that is exactly how I want people to feel when wearing my label.

SD: What is your favourite part of being a designer?

K: I think the very best thing for me about being a designer is that through my clothes I get to be a part of so many special and important events in peoples’ lives.  I get sent pictures and thank you’s from customers sharing with me where they wore RicRac and it feels wonderful to be a part of these important moments. Everything from weddings, graduations, first tv appearances to long planned holidays.  I feel so lucky to get to do this and love it when customers share all of this with me.

SD: Without giving too much details away, what should we expect from your collection for Brisbane Fashion Month?

K: I did not intend to start RicRac as an event wear label but it has very much headed that way. I have had people tell me that when they are searching for something to wear to an event that they look to me.  I LOVE the warmer months of the year and especially all the parties and celebrations that happen so I have got you sorted for those holiday and end of year celebrations. I think that you are going to look at my runway items and immediately think, “ I can wear that too…”.
