INTERVIEW with Arabella Wang || Artist
SD: Can you tell us a little about your art and your background?
AW: Natural elements play an important role in the soul of my paintings. In my cognition, everyone is brought to this world with a different mission, whether to continue, or tell, or to write legacy. I believe I am an observer, capturing memories in the wind and listening to footprints in my dreams. The progress of painting became the media, a method to explore the other dimensions of mind and thought. In this lifetime I had the fortunate to be born in a land full of pristine spring. Childhood filled with bubbles in the springs; giggles with swallows in sunset. Listening to the coolness of the zither line cutting through the autumn wind, witnessing the lotus that spread freely in the midsummer lake. These elements presented to me that there is more to this physical world that we can see with our eyes.
Color is an element that occupies most of my life. Whether it comes from the colorfulness of all creatures in the world, or the splendor poured into the dessert, lakes and forest. Color is the spirit that carries and breathing in life, and my responsibility is to articulate its mission as best I can. To explore our unique characteristics in the universe, and the role color, emotion, and self-discovery play in living a harmonious life.
SD: What are your other hobbies outside of art?
AW: I love to spend time with my bird and my plants. Sharing precious time with them and watch them grow.
SD: In terms of your artwork, which artists have inspired you?
AW: Charmaine Olivia
SD: Have you ever experienced “artist’s block?” If so, what are some strategies you’ve used to overcome it?
AW: I take notes of inspirations daily and refer to the notes when I need elements for new creations.
SD: What do you like about painting?
AW: The process of creation is the vitality of the flowing paint, the establishment of constant exploration, and the opportunity to reconcile with oneself.
SD: Can you describe your work process?
AW: Always start with inspirations, from life, from experiences, or from things I've seen in a daily basis.
SD: What is your definition of art career success?
AW: In order to be heard and to be seen. Use my art as a powerful media to speak for the ones that are in need, to speak on behalf of the silent and to impact on the ones to be seen.
SD: What personality trait do you have that has been most helpful in your art career?
AW: I'm a listener and observer. There are always more impactful and meaningful things around in life, and to stay open minded to respect the differences will always help me to grow and stay curious.
SD: What famous artist from history would you like to spend a day with and what would you do together?
AW: Andy Warhol. I admire his courage and spirit. With the complete opposite personalities, I believe there are so much I could learn and discover in his life.
SD: What’s an exciting project you have lined up that you can tell us about?
AW: I'm planning for a launch party for my latest bunny collections to celebrate this unique and remarkable year of my life <3
