INTERVIEW with Ravishing Fashionistas Designer 2023 - SFH Designs Boutique

SD: Hi Sarah, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
SH: Hi everyone, my name is Sarah Hutson and I am the Creative Director and Owner of SFH Designs Boutique in New Farm, Brisbane. I am also busy at home with my family of 3 daughters (aged 22, 20 and 17 years old), hubby Rob and kitty cat, Delilah.
SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?
SH: Well there has been such diverse trends this year and the younger generations have influenced me here, with looks ranging from a Vivian Westwood tartan vibe to the fabulous plastic Barbie in pink gingham dresses (with the release of the Movie).
SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?
SH: Sitting still and really having the time to think without interruption, which is hard to do! I love looking through Pinterest boards, but when I’m on the right track, ideas just fall into place and happen.
SD: When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career in fashion?
SH: Oh only a few years ago, when I met my seamstress and she wanted to sew for me, so I had to produce designs and it just expanded from there. I was then getting invited to present my designs at major Fashion Shows (which got me hooked!). I now love to show and entertain the crowds for charity fashion shows.
SD: What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line?
I didn’t have fears as my expectations were to just have fun with it and share the joy for colourful and unique clothes.
SD: How do you want women/people to feel when wearing your clothes?
SH: Oh I want them to feel confident, put their shoulders back and love what they are wearing. Our goal is to ‘stop traffic’, and I love hearing back from clients how they have received so many compliments wearing our designs.
SD: There’s so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to young designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry?
SH: If you have a great design that everyone loves, don’t change it too much maybe just the colour/fabric. Always aim to keep your costs low and make sure you enjoy the process.
