INTERVIEW with East Of Grey || Brisbane Fashion Festival 2024 Designer (Hancock Prospecting Next Gen Group Show)
SD: Hi Kim, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
K: Hi, I’m Kim. I’m a creative person through and through, my brain is always thinking ‘What can I make?”
I always wanted to be a fashion designer so I went to TAFE to learn all of the industry skills I would need before starting my career. I started out working for a Gold Coast based surf company and loved every minute, but I just wanted to start my own clothing label, so I did. And now I juggle many aspects to my business, not only do I design and create one-of-a-kind garments, I also teach others through sewing workshops in my home studio, and travel around Australia teaching all things fashion and sewing to students in Secondary Schools.
SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?
K: Western prairie meets punk - think Stevie Nicks and Vivienne Westwood.
SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?
K: Creating a mood board, digging through my fabric stash and trims, basically creating a huge mess I can edit it all into a great design. And music, always music.
SD: How do you want people to feel when wearing your pieces?
K: Spectacular! I want people to feel special and unique.
SD: What is your favourite part of being a designer?
K: Making clothes to fit my body and style haha, but seriously, I love putting different fabrics and prints together to create pieces you wouldn’t see in the department stores. It gives me great pleasure when people fall in love with a garment I’ve made, there’s nothing better.
SD: Without giving too much details away, what should we expect from your collection for Brisbane Fashion Festival 2024 event?
K: Think tartan, floral and metal.
