INTERVIEW with Brisbane Fashion Month Designer 2023 - Kablooie

SD: Hi Keneena, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
K: Of course! I am the creator, designer and owner at Kablooie Store, my sustainable Australian fashion label full of colourful, quirky, happy pieces. Kablooie Store's vision is to create fabulous fashion pieces for you that look incredible, feel comfortable, and make you feel deep-down happy! I've been running Kablooie since 2015, after taking a break from work to have our 3 children. In a previous work life, I worked in economics, strategic financing, and project management, and I have a business degree in economics and resources management. I've always love art and design and love combining them with my skills in business.
SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?
K: My latest collection is about combining sustainability with vibrant colour and happy clothing! It's a statement that responsible fashion can be incredibly fun, with a nod to some quirky retro styles from the 80's - the fabrics are definitely the stars of the show.
SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?
K: Usually I have to sit down with actual fabric and get busy with my hands to make progress on a new design. I'll often just sit with piles of fabrics, trying out combinations together and layering things together. Very hands on. I also often feel inspired by a colour I see somewhere or a combination of colours, from anything from a magazine to graffiti in a side street.
SD: How do you want people to feel when wearing your pieces?
K: Deep down glowingly happy! That's the bottom line for me. I want people to keep reaching for their Kablooie because of how much they love how they feel when they wear it.
SD: What is your favourite part of being a designer?
K: I love being able to translate the ideas in my head to fabric designs and garment styles, and I absolutely love having feedback from my customers about how incredible they feel in one of my pieces. Because I make to order I can customise each piece, and there's nothing like getting an email or a review that tells me what a difference it has made to customers to have a dress they love in the size and style that works perfectly for them.
SD: Without giving too much details away, what should we expect from your collection for Brisbane Fashion Month?
K: Lots of sweeping maxi's, fun layers of ruffles, and of course, an absolutely chaotic amount of colour and pattern clash!
