INTERVIEW with Brisbane Fashion Month 2023 Designer - Bulley Bulley

SD: Hi Bianca, for my readers who don’t know you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
BB: Hi, I’m Bianca Bulley, one half of BULLEY BULLEY, a fashion duo along with my sister, Kiara Bulley. With a background in costume and fashion we have a resonating love for the dressed body and are intrigued by the stories and history woven into clothing and textiles. Our work often explores the boundaries of fashion and costume and we are constantly surprised by the creative possibilities that emerge from our collaboration.
SD: What was the biggest inspiration behind your latest collection?
BB: The biggest inspiration behind our collection always stems from our immediate lives - maybe I’m working on an opera that is based in the the 18th century? naturally those patterns and textures then work their way into our own collection. We are also fascinated by how our relationship, discussions, and shared ideas manifest in our designs. We are always inspired by stories. For us it’s about exploring the connection between costume, stories, and fashion and finding a middle space for our competing thoughts to settle.
SD: What helps you get in the zone when you’re designing?
BB: To get in the zone when designing, we create a quite chaotic creative space where we can bounce ideas off each other and explore these ideas with our hands. We also draw inspiration from our ongoing conversations about what we are currently obsessed with (it’s usually bows), which fuels our creativity.
SD: How do you want people to feel when wearing your pieces?
BB: We want people to feel a sense of connection and uniqueness when wearing our pieces. It’s about embracing the stories and history embedded in each garment, making the wearer feel like they are part of a larger narrative.
SD: What is your favourite part of being a designer?
BB: Our favorite part of being designers is the constant exploration and experimentation with fashion. We love the process of creating and wearing clothes that carry direct links to fashion history and the many stories associated with this.
SD: Without giving too much details away, what should we expect from your collection for Brisbane Fashion Month?
BB: Without giving away too many details, you can expect our collection for Brisbane Fashion Month to be a creative fusion of our love for fashion history, some silly sibling dynamics, and an exploration of shape and form. It will be a unique and thought-provoking experience for fashion enthusiasts.
